SHORT  HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT:
The microbiology   Department started functioning since 1998 and has crossed milestones in the  past 14 years. Even before the teaching programme was implemented  the clinical  laboratory started  functioning catering  to the  needs  of  the  patients since 1998 performing  basic bacteriologic cultures and serological tests. In 2001  the department  was equipped  with a complete Elisa system for performing  HIV testing. The  clinical microbiology laboratory has been  fully computerized using the WHONET  Software facilitating the analysis of antimicrobial susceptibility pattern and surveillance of hospital acquired  pathogens . The microscopic agglutination test for leptospirosis is done exclusively  in the department  apart from being done  in Madras Medical College. The department is committed to public Health programmes like integrated Disease  Surveillance Programme(IDSP) and  RNTCP.
